Transformation Zaaiersweg

Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Program: Living, Transformation
Client: Lingotto
Floor Area: 1.350m2
Status: Completed in 2017

Every urbanite’s dream: to live in a gloriously repurposed heritage-listed building. Space Encounters/Beyond Space joined a group of future owners and developer Lingotto and won the commission to transform a characteristic former school in Betondorp, Amsterdam East, into 8 apartments.

A true co-creation effort, all involved parties met regularly for workshops and brainstorm sessions to define the concept. The result marries the old and the new: through an intervention that forms a precise add-on to the original structure, we restored the building to its former glory, using contemporary materials and techniques to emphasise its original shape, its clear architectural idea and composition.

History Transformation Zaaiersweg
New situation Transformation Zaaiersweg

With its rigidly organised and large windows, the new facade facing the inner court echoes monumentality. Sustaining the original bright and high classrooms, dimmed and intimate corridors and the spectacular top floor, this transformation and renewed monument was completed in 2016.
